Recently, a horrific incident occurred on the JR Saikyo Line in Tokyo, Japan, and it caused massive disruption to train services, causing significant inconvenience during the evening rush hour. What Happened on the JR Saikyo Line in Tokyo?

According to reports, it was a horrific incident that occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, at around 4:30 pm on the JR Saikyo Line in Tokyo, Japan. The incident caused massive disruption to train services, affecting traffic during the evening rush hour. According to reports, a youth started waving and showing scissors inside the train compartment, causing panic among the passengers. Passengers immediately informed the authorities that a man having knife inside the train compartment. 

Arrest at Jujo Station and Police Action

Upon receiving the information, police officers rushed to Jujo station and arrested the boy as soon as the train arrived. He was arrested on the spot on suspicion of violating the penal code related to physical violence and other crimes. The young man has been identified as a 17-year-old boy, and he was arrested at Jujo Station. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. However, reports indicate that several passengers complained of feeling unwell due to the stress and panic of the situation. 

Train Lines Affected and Service Suspensions

JR East halted all these interconnected lines to conduct thorough security checks and allow the Metropolitan Police Department to conduct its own investigation on the tracks and inside the carriages. The incident occurred right during Friday night rush hour (hana-kin), resulting in widespread chaos. The incident caused a complete shutdown of three lines, including the Saikyo Line, the Shonan-Shinjuku Line, and the Keihin-Tohoku Line. Operations on the Utsunomiya Line and Takasaki Line were also partially/fully suspended. 

Traffic Disruption and Service Resume Time

The incident caused heavy traffic jams on major Tokyo-Saitama-Kanagawa routes during rush hour on Friday. Most services began to resume around 6:00 pm (JST), although significant delays and residual traffic jams continued throughout the evening.
