Recently, Elon Musk announced and shared details about a significant update and major changes to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature. He confirmed these details by sharing a post on his social media platform X. His announcement marks one of the most significant changes to Tesla’s business model since the launch of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) program. Let’s continue your reading to know, and we will try to mention all the details in this article.
The post was shared at 12:00 PM on 14 January 202,6 and the post stated
“Tesla will stop selling FSD after Feb 14.”
“FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter.”
Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will permanently remove the option to purchase FSD as a one-time lifetime add-on. FSD is available on the current model (Supervised) for a one-time fee of $8,000 or a subscription fee of $99 per month. But now the $8,000 “buyout” disappears. The only way to access FSD features is through a monthly subscription. If you already paid $8,000 (or the previous price), you’ll continue to enjoy the features. This change primarily affects new vehicle buyers or owners who have not yet upgraded their vehicle.
Buy or get a subscription
If you plan to keep your Tesla for more than 7 years, it would technically be cheaper to buy it now. However, with hardware evolving rapidly (for example, the transition from hardware 3 to hardware 4), many owners feel that “buying” software for a 7-year-old computer may be a risky investment.
What Should You Do?
If you are a “Long-Termer”: If you keep cars for 10+ years and want FSD, you have until Valentine’s Day (Feb 14) to lock in the lifetime price. If you trade in frequently, the subscription at $99/month remains the better choice, as you aren’t “sinking” $8,000 into a depreciating asset. Ensure your vehicle has the latest hardware (HW4) before committing to a buyout, as older chips may not support future “Unsupervised” versions of the software.
