Prakam Diwas 2026: Why do we celebrate? Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Parakram Diwas is celebrated on 23 January every year as a national day in India to mark the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It is the “Day of Valour,” and this time the nation will celebrate Netaji’s 129th birth anniversary on 23 January 2026. If you are a student, then multiple questions are also arising in your mind related to this day. So we made an article and mentioned all the available details in this article.

Why do we celebrate it?

Parakram Diwas was officially designated by the Government of India in 2021 to remember the Honor the Legacy and pay tribute to Netaji’s “indomitable spirit” and his selfless service to the nation. This day was designated to inspire the youth and encourage the younger generation to act with fortitude and courage in the face of adversity, just as him.

Netaji was recognized for his contribution to the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) during the period of the struggle for independence.

In whose remembrance is it celebrated?

I think you may know that Parakram Diwas is dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, one of India’s most iconic and revered freedom fighters. He was a revolutionary leader who did the most notable work in the independence of the Nation.

He was born as Subhash Chandra Bose on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha, and received the title of Netaji by the Indian soldiers of the Azad Hind Fauj (INA) and officials at the Special Bureau for India in Berlin in early 1942, as a mark of respect for his leadership in the independence struggle.

Netaji’s title means “Respected Leader,” and he served as a leader. He was a brilliant student who ranked 4th in the prestigious Indian Civil Service (ICS) exam in England, but he resigned in 1921 because he refused to serve the British government.

He also served as the President of the Indian National Congress (1938, 1939). At the time of World War II (1939 to 1945), he escaped from house arrest in India, traveled to Germany and Japan, and took command of the Indian National Army (INA) and established the Azad Hind Fauz in exile on October 21, 1943.

He gave the stirring slogans that followed:

  • “Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azadi dunga” (Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom)
  • Delhi Chalo
  • The most famous slogan is “Jai Hind.”

Parakram Diwas is now known as a National Day, and it is celebrated at various places in multiple ways, such as organising grand events, Red Fort celebrations, Tributes, school activities, and more. Cuttack, his birthplace, and Kolkata celebrate the day as a major celebration.

Prime Minister inaugurates “Bharat Parv” or special exhibitions at the Red Fort in Delhi. On this day, military parades, floral tributes to his statues, and the release of commemorative coins or stamps. Various kinds of debates, patriotic song competitions, and plays based on his life are performed on this day in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.
